Environment - Tropical Forests Are Reaching Their Carbon Dioxide Limit (Bloomberg) - Rainforests and trees in Africa and the Amazon are not capturing carbon they way they have in previous years - about 1/3 less than in the 1990s.
What you can do: the greatest threat to rainforests and carbon sequestration is deforestation. Avoid purchasing products that use palm oil and buy produce from companies committed to sustainable growing practices.
Tech - Twitter is testing ephemeral tweets in Brazil and calling them ‘fleets’ (The Verge) - Twitter is testing 'fleets’ posts set to appear in a separate timeline above the main timeline for 24 hours. In other news - Twitter’s CEO, Jack Dorsey, is likely to be ousted over the coming months.
What you can do: hang tight until the update hits us. Stay tuned for Twitter updates, as it’s still a major platform for the dissemination of news across the globe, and the internal chaos of a CEO shift may not be the best move for the platform.
Retail - The emerging coronavirus economy (Axios) - Companies advantageous to consumers who want to stay in the house - like shelf-stable food companies, at-home exercise equipment companies, and big pharma companies - are benefiting from the coronavirus. Supermarkets and basic good suppliers are hunkering down for an onset of demand compounded by lower supply.
What you can do: stop stocking up if you live in urban areas. Panic buying is often a self-fulfilling prophecy, so proceed as normal until it becomes necessary to act differently. Your access to fresh food, if not limited now, will likely be okay.
US / World News - US firm helps J&K build firewall to keep social media off-limits even when internet returns (The Print) - For reference: internet had been suspended in Kashmir since August 4 (the longest in a democratic country) as a result of tension with the government until partially eased in January. US-based firm Cisco Systems is on tap to help the administration build a firewall to keep blacklisted websites, notably social media platforms, inaccessible, as they continue to restore internet to the region.
